Summer Camp Volunteer Placements

New for summer 2019

We are currently recruiting summer-camp volunteers for the Happy English Summer Camp project in conjunction with our partners CITIC International Travel.  Please see below for full details of the programme and scroll to the bottom of the page to download our application form. 


Programme Information

  • Contracts are from 1st July 2019 to 31st August 2019.
  • The deadline for applications is 10th May 2019.
  • Participants will volunteer 8 hours per day, 5 days per week.
  • Summer camps will be held in Changchun, Changsha, Guangzhou, Guiyang and Shenzhen. 
  • All camps are in rural locations not the cities themselves. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for further information.
  • Campers are Chinese students aged 7 to 17.
  • Volunteers will be responsible for organising and leading camp activities including English classes, sports and games, drama and performances, arts and crafts.
  • Volunteers are not required to speak Chinese and bilingual assistants will be provided.


Person Specification

  • Applicants must be aged 18 or over.
  • Applicants must be well organised and capable of managing campers in a wide range of summer camp activities.
  • Applicants must have excellent English language and communication skills. 
  • A background in teaching, drama or sport would be an advantage but is not essential.
  • Previous relevant voluntary/work experience would also be an advantage.
  • We are looking for positive, mature, outgoing, friendly and adventurous volunteers.


Benefits Package

  • We will arrange and pay upfront for your return flights to China and any work related travel in China.
  • We will pay for your Chinese visa and provide visa application assistance.*
  • We will provide free accommodation for the duration of your contract.
  • You will be provided with a small living allowance of £100 per month to subsidise daily living costs.
  • GTIC will provide full pre-departure support to volunteers in the UK prior to departure and CITIC International Travel will provide personal and professional support for the duration of your stay in China.
  • There are NO fees or deposit to pay.

*Volunteers will be reimbursed their visa fee within 7 working days and must keep receipts/invoices as proof of purchase.

The capital of Jilin province in the northeast of China. Changchun was also the capital of Manchukuo, a Japanese puppet state, and home to the last emperor of China; Puyi. Changchun has long, warm, pleasant summers with an average temperature of 20 degrees celsius. There are many lakes, mountains, forest parks and ski resorts around Changchun.



The capital of Hunan province in central China and former home of Mao Zedong. Changsha's history can be traced back 3000 years. The city is surrounded by various mountain ranges including Wuling and Hengshan. Summers are long, hot and humid with an average temperature of around 30 degrees celsius.



Formerly known as Canton in the west, Guangzhou is the capital of Guandong province located in southern China. The weather is hot with frequent rain in the summer and temperatures in the low thirties. The surrounding countryside is one of the major areas for rice production in China. There are many natural attractions and interesting old villages surrounding Guangzhou.



The capital of Guizhou province located in the southwest of China. Guiyang is surrounded by forests and mountains many of which have been terraced for rice production. Guiyang has a large Miao population famed for their distinctive wooden architecture. Summers are hot but comfortable with temperatures in the mid to high twenties. 



Shenzhen is a major costal city in Guangdong province sitting immediately to the north of Hong Kong. Summers are hot and wet, with temperatures of around 30 degrees celsius. Dameisha, Xiaomeisha and Dapeng Bay are popular beach resorts to the east. To the west lies Inner Lingding Island, a nature reserve and a water resort.
